Platforms

Oracle

An Oracle estate is expensive to run, expensive to get wrong, and expensive to be audited on. Fortified Data manages, tunes, and modernizes Oracle environments, including the RAC, Data Guard, ASM, and Exadata configurations most teams inherit rather than choose, and treats the license position as part of the platform rather than as a renewal problem.

What Fortified Data does on Oracle

Fortified Data provides managed services, consulting, and assessments for Oracle Database, covering monitoring and incident response, AWR-based performance and PL/SQL tuning, patching, backup and recovery with RMAN, high availability with Real Application Clusters and Data Guard, version upgrades, migration to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, license optimization and audit readiness, and database consolidation, across Oracle Database 12c, 19c, and 21c.

Available as an ongoing managed service, as a fixed-scope consulting engagement, or as an assessment that establishes which of the two an environment needs.

Two things make Oracle unlike the other platforms in this section, and neither is technical. The licensing model can cost more than the hardware it runs on, and a configuration change made for sound technical reasons can change what is owed. Oracle also audits its customers, which means the question is not only whether the environment is well run but whether it can be shown to be.

This page states what Fortified Data does on Oracle rather than what Oracle is. The supported configurations, the version range, and the deliverables are below.

The work on an Oracle estate

Six areas, covered continuously under a managed service and individually as project work.

Monitoring and incident response

Continuous health checks and alerting across performance, availability, and security, with remediation attached to the alert rather than a notification nobody owns.

Performance tuning and AWR analysis

Query and index optimization, workload analysis from AWR and ASH data, system-level configuration, and PL/SQL tuning where the code itself is the constraint.

High availability and disaster recovery

Real Application Clusters, Data Guard, and Automatic Storage Management designed and configured against your recovery time and recovery point objectives, with failover tested rather than assumed.

Backup and recovery

RMAN strategy design, daily oversight, and recovery testing that establishes the backups restore inside the objectives the business has agreed to.

Patching, security, and compliance

Scheduled and emergency patching to keep instances supported, plus security and compliance audits against the governance and regulatory requirements in scope for your data.

Upgrades, migrations, and consolidation

Version upgrades, moves between on-premises, cloud, and hybrid platforms, and consolidation of instance sprawl, which on Oracle reduces licensing exposure as well as management overhead.

Versions, configurations, and licensing

What is supported, and what that support means

Fortified Data supports Oracle Database 12c, 19c, and 21c under a managed service, on premises, on Exadata, and in cloud. Releases older than those are supported as an upgrade or migration engagement rather than as indefinite maintenance, because an unsupported release receives no security patches and the correct answer is a costed path off it.

Feature use is the part that surprises people. Options and management packs can be switched on by a default setting, by a DBA solving a problem at speed, or by a monitoring tool, and they are chargeable from the moment they are used. Fortified Data reviews which features are actually enabled, identifies what is licensed and unused and what is used and unlicensed, and puts both in writing before anyone else asks the question.

What you receive

Evidence, on a cadence, in writing. On Oracle the documentation is worth as much as the work, because it is what an audit asks for.

Monthly health report

System health, the incidents of the month and what caused them, and the optimization opportunities found, written to be read by someone who was not in the room.

Performance baseline and change list

A measured baseline from AWR data, then every tuning change recorded with what it altered and what it produced, so an improvement can be proved rather than asserted.

Backup and recovery evidence

RMAN job oversight and the results of recovery tests measured against your stated objectives, which is the difference between a backup strategy and a backup schedule.

Availability architecture documentation

The RAC, Data Guard, and ASM configuration as it actually stands, with the failover behavior written down, rather than held by whoever built it.

Capacity and growth forecast

Growth analysis projected forward, so the next resource constraint appears in a plan rather than in an incident.

License position and audit readiness

Feature usage and entitlement reconciled, with the gaps in both directions listed and a remediation order, so an audit finds a prepared estate rather than a surprised one.

Why Fortified Data on Oracle

Licensing is treated as part of the platform

Feature usage, entitlement, and audit readiness are handled alongside the technical work, because on Oracle a design decision and an invoice are the same decision.

Advanced configurations, not just instances

RAC, Data Guard, ASM, Exadata, and GoldenGate are run rather than referred out, which is the difference between managing Oracle and managing a database that happens to be Oracle.

Leaving Oracle stays on the table

Whether staying is the right answer is a question the assessment is allowed to reach. A move to PostgreSQL or SQL Server is costed against the current baseline rather than assumed in either direction.

Common questions about Oracle services

Which Oracle Database versions does Fortified Data support?

Fortified Data supports Oracle Database 12c, 19c, and 21c under a managed service, on premises, on Exadata, in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and in Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud. Older releases are supported as an upgrade or migration engagement, because a release past its support date receives no security patches.

Does Fortified Data support Real Application Clusters and Data Guard?

Yes. Fortified Data designs, configures, and manages Real Application Clusters, Data Guard, and Automatic Storage Management, including Exadata environments, and tests failover rather than assuming it. The design starts from stated recovery time and recovery point objectives rather than from the feature list.

Can Fortified Data help prepare for an Oracle license audit?

Yes. Fortified Data reviews which database options and management packs are actually in use, reconciles that against entitlement, and reports the gaps in both directions, including features that are licensed and unused. Remediation is sequenced before an audit rather than negotiated during one. Fortified Data provides the technical evidence and analysis; the commercial and contractual response remains with your own legal and procurement teams.

Can Fortified Data move Oracle workloads to the cloud?

Yes, to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, as a fixed-scope migration with compatibility analysis, validation against the source, and a tested rollback path. Licensing is part of that decision rather than a consequence of it, because the same workload carries different entitlement implications on each target.

Should we migrate from Oracle to PostgreSQL?

Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on the workload rather than on the platform. Fortified Data assesses which Oracle workloads convert cleanly to PostgreSQL, which depend on features with no direct equivalent, and what the conversion of PL/SQL and application logic would cost, then compares that against the current Oracle position. The assessment is written so that staying on Oracle remains a legitimate outcome.

Does Fortified Data support Oracle E-Business Suite?

Fortified Data supports the database layer beneath Oracle E-Business Suite environments, covering performance, availability, backup, patching, and upgrades, where that scope is agreed at the start of the engagement. Application-functional support for E-Business Suite itself is outside that scope.

Start with the Oracle estate you actually have

A health check documents performance, availability, security, and configuration across every instance, and produces a prioritized list of what to fix first. On Oracle it also establishes what the estate is currently using, which is usually the more expensive question.
